Will Diego Perotti play his first World Cup finals this summer ? After years of continued snub, the 29-year-old attacking midfielder has a real chance to be on the plane to Russia. Few months ago, this scenario seemed totally unrealistic but the Moreno-born has reversed the trend.
Perotti made his international debut with Argentina in 2009, few weeks after taking part in the Toulon Tournament. He was then rewarded for his performances with Sevilla FC by a second international cap on June 2011. And then ? Nothing. He remained out of the Argentina national team for several years.
Meanwhile, Perotti has left Sevilla FC. After a loan spell at Boca Juniors and two seasons spent at Genoa, the Argentinian international has joined AS Roma in 2016. With the Serie A side, Perotti got back to his best but he was still ignored by his national team.
However, more than six years after Perotti last wore the Albiceleste shirt, Jorge Sampaoli handed him an Argentina recall on November 2017. The AS Roma player made the most of this opportunity as he featured in the friendlies against Russia (1-0) and Nigeria (2-4).
Enough to convince Sampoli to select him again for the upcoming friendlies at the end of March against Italy and Spain.
It’s obviously sounds like a good sign while the World Cup is just over three months away.
