The Asian Champions League trophy stays in Japan. One year after Urawa Red Diamonds, Kashima Antlers have been crowned Asian champions, for the first time ever, as they have beaten the Iranian side Persepolis.
In good position following their 2-0 win in the first leg, the Japanese players clinched a 0-0 win in Iran front of the 100 000 fans who attended the game at the Azadi Stadium.
Like during the first leg, Hiroki Abe, the Kashima hot prospect seen at the Maurice Revello Tournament 2017, has been included in the starting XI.
At only 19, the Japanese attacking midfielder wins his first major trophy. Only few days after helping his country to qualify for the U20 World Cup.
