Best XIs of the Maurice Revello Tournament : Mexico (9/12)

A few weeks before its 47th edition, from 1st to 15th June, the Maurice Revello Tournament goes back in time. Since 1967, thousands of players have trodden the Festival’s pitches. Among them, nearly 2000 became international within the sixty-five different nations who have taken part in the competition. To travel through the Tournament’s fifty years of history, each one marked by some famous football players at their debuts, we have imagined twelve dream teams, country by country. Nineth best XI, Mexico.

Jorge Campos (1988) : The Pumas goalkeeper took part in the Maurice Revello Tournament in 1988. He stayed in this club until 1995 before to travel between Americans and Mexicans clubs. He finished his career in 2004 in the CF Puebla. Fun fact, he was a striker in his debut, and was helping out in the front when his team was losing (39 goals, 241 games).

Claudio Suarez (1988) : The Mexican central defender, nicknamed “El Emperador” throughout his career, participated in the Maurice Revello Tournament 1988. In 1996, he joined Chivas of Guadalajara for three years. After five seasons (143 games, 15 goals), he finished his career in Chivas USA. Until 2012, he held the world record of the number of international caps for a defender, with 178 caps for 6 goals between 1992 and 2006.

Hector Moreno (2006) : The Mexican centre back participated in the Maurice Revello Tournament the same year he signed for Pumas (2006). He showed himself at the international stand by entering in the Dutch League with AZ Alkmaar and won the title in 2009. Then, he featured five seasons in Spain at RCD Espanyol, and returned to the Netherlands under the colors of PSV Eindhoven. In 2017, he played a few games in Italy for AS Roma (5 matches). Since 2018, he is playing for Real Sociedad.

Diego Reyes (2011-2012) : The Mexican centre back participated two consecutive years in the Maurice Revello Tournament, while he was just starting at Club America. He made his first steps on the international stand in Portugal, at FC Porto, during five seasons from 2013. He was loaned to Real Sociedad and RCD Espanyol.

Jesus Corona (2013) : The Mexican striker had already been at CF Monterrey for three years when he took part in the Maurice Revello Tournament (2013). Then, he went to Netherlands, joining FC Twente from 2013 to 2015, scoring 13 goals in 51 games. Since 2015, he is playing in Portugal, at FC Porto (22 goals, 164 games).


Jesus Corona (2013)

Javier Aguirre (1978) : The Mexican midfielder was playing for Club America while he took part in the Maurice Revello Tournament (1978). Two years later, he opened up to the international scene by signing, in the United States, in Los Angeles Aztecs. After a year, he finally returned to Club America. In three seasons, he scored 31 goals in 128 games. He continued his career in Mexico with two seasons at CF Atlante. In 1986, he did only one season in Spain, at Osasuna. He finished his career in 1993 in Guadalajara after five seasons (181 appearances, 17 goals). Since 1995 he has coached clubs in Mexico (CF Atlante, CF Pachuca, Mexico), in Spain (Osasuna, Atlético de Madrid, Real Zaragoza, Espanyol). Since 2018, he has coached Egypt after Japan (2014-2015) and Al-Wahda (2015-2016).

Hector Herrera (2012) : The Mexican midfielder participated in the Maurice Revello Tournament 2012, two years before he signed for CF Pachuca. Since 2013, he hasn’t left FC Porto. After having spent his first year in the youth squad, he reached the first team and shined, scoring 34 goals in 239 games. Since 2012, he has scored 5 goals for Mexico in 70 caps.

Alberto Garcia Aspe (1985) : The Mexican offensive midfielder took part in the Maurice Revello Tournament in 1985, in his first year at Pumas. After seven seasons (180 games, 40 goals), he stayed in Mexico with Club Necaxa until 1997. His first steps on the international scene were in Argentina, with River Plate. In 2002, he retired after having played at CF Puebla from 1999.
 
Marco Fabian (2012) : The Mexican attacking midfielder has already accumulated experience, playing at Chivas de Guadalajara since 2007, before his participation in the Maurice Revello Tournament (2012). After 168 games and 39 goals, he was transferred to the Eintracht Frankfurt in 2016. Since 2019, he is playing in the United States, at Philadelphia Union.

Hugo Sanchez (1975-1976) : The Mexican striker just joined Pumas before his first appearance at the Maurice Revello Tournament, in 1975 and then 1976. After five seasons with 102 goals in 197 games, he joined Atlético de Madrid and then Real Madrid in 1985. 208 goals scored in 283 matches later, an average of 27 goals over four seasons between 1986 and 1990, he won the European top-scorer title in 1990 thanks to 38 goals scored during the 1989-1990 season.

Raul Jimenez (2012) : After his signature in Club America, the Mexican played once in the Maurice Revello Tournament (2012). After three seasons, he joined Atlético de Madrid for the 2014-2015 season. He established himself on the international scene during his four seasons at Benfica (31 goals, 120 games). He is currently loaned to Wolverhampton.
