Cristiano Ronaldo against Javier Mascherano. Before to face each other during many Clasicos over the last years, both of them played against for the first time in France, during Toulon Tournament 2003. This year, Portugal won the title. But it was the Argentinian that impressed the most. Named as the best player of the competition, Javier Mascherano, was only 19 years old at the moment. The midfielder, who scored a goal during the group round, has shone and shown all his technical abilities.

At the moment, Mascherano was a River Plate player. After two seasons with the North Buenos Aires club and one with Corinthians, in Brazil, he travelled to Europe. On 2006, he signed for West Ham at the same time with another Argentinian, Carlos Tevez. But, as his compatriot, he became a football star somewhere else.

Blessed with his clubs, cursed with his country

Mascherano joined Liverpool on 2007 and finally confirmed all his potential. With a great spirit and a wonderful technique, he established himself as one of the best Red players. Enough to make Barcelona FC bet on him. The Spanish club signed him on 2010 and turned him into a centre-back. With Catalan club, he won seventeen trophies, including two Champions League and four Liga.

With 136 calls-up with Argentina, he is the second player who has played the most with the Albiceleste. With his national team, he won two golden medals in the Olympic Games 2004 and 2008. Unfortunately for him, it was his only two titles with the national squad. As a curse, Mascherano and Argentina lost five finals in twelve years : Copa America 2004, 2007, 2015 and 2016, and World Cup 2014. Maybe the only bad point in his career full of success and started at the Festival International Espoirs.
