It was written that his career will be made of wins, wins and wins again. It is that whay it started, and that way it continues today with his head coach function.
A bit before summer 1988, France took part to the 16th year of Toulon Tournament
. Led by David Ginola, they clinched it, thanks to a win against England in final. But alongside the elegant forward, named as the second best player of the competition this year, another man is behind this success. This man is Didier Deschamps.
This year, he won the Special Price, which rewards one of the best players who couldn't reach the podium with the three of them. As a symbol of Deschamps' carreer, often in the shade but always a key player of all the teams he won with.
Another title twenty years later ?
The former midfielder has won everything, or almost. In his titles: a World Cup and a Euro with France, whose he is with 103 calls-up the sixth player to have play the most with and today the head coach. But also two Champions League, including one with Olympique de Marseille, at this day the only French team to have won this European title.
Leader with a great team spirit, Deschamps is a real captain. If he had not an oustanding technique, he knew how to be essential, thanks to his smartness, his character and his influence in the dressing room. So, not astonishing to see him as a coach today, with the same success: a Champions League final with Monaco, four trophies with Marseille and a Euro final with France. Such a good assessment which he could improve. The World Cup will take place next summer, twenty years after he won the Toulon Tournament. A sign, you said?
