Reinaldo Rueda, the man to rescue the Chilean national team

After writing the most successful chapter in the Chilean football history by winning two Copa America (2015 and 2016), the golden generation led by Alexis Sanchez, Arturo Vidal & co failed to qualify for the World Cup 2018.

Following this disappointing qualifying campaign, the Chilean Football Federation (ANFP) decided to name Reinaldo Rueda as the head coach of la Roja.

The Toulon Tournament fans will remember that the 60-year-old won our competition in 2000 as the Colombia’s head coach. Then, he took part again in the Festival three years later in 2003.

Reinaldo Rueda started to impress in the Southern France but the Colombian coach has built his reputation during the next years on the South American scene.

Rueda has notably enjoyed a successful spell at Atletico Nacional where he won two Colombian League titles, one Colombian cup as well as the Copa Libertadores 2016. Following his trophy-laden spell with the Medellin-based club, Rueda has also led Flamengo to the Copa Sudamericana 2017 final, which was the first continental final reached by the Brazilian club in sixteen years.

Before that, Rueda has also coached the Colombian national team and qualified both Honduras and Ecuador for the World Cups 2010 and 2014 respectively.

After taking part in two World Cups, Reinaldo Rueda is probably aiming to compete in this competition for the third time with Chile…
