Two years after Raul Jimenez, another Maurice Revello Tournament 2012 winner has been handed the Gold Cup best player award.

He was expected to be one of the Gold Cup 2021 stars and he has met the expectations. Despite the Mexico’s loss in final against hosts United States (0-1), Hector Herrera has been named best player of the Gold Cup 2021.

The 31-year-old midfielder has taken the competition by storm. After a solid group stage capped off by two assists against Guatemala (3-0) and El Salvador (1-0) as well as a strong display against Trinidad-and-Tobago (0-0), the Atletico Madrid player and Mexico captain has then scored a last-gasp winner against Canada (2-1) in the semi-finals.

This is the second edition in a row that the Gold Cup best player award has been handed to a Maurice Revello Tournament 2012 winner : in 2019, this individual award has been given to Raul Jimenez, the Mexico and Wolverhampton striker.

The last months have been successful for Hector Herrera. Except the Gold Cup best player award, the Mexico international (85 games, 8 goals) clinched the Spanish league title at the end of the 2020-2021 campaign with Atletico Madrid.
