The Sudamericano U20, a qualifier for the U20 World Cup, starts this Thursday evening in Colombia. Among the 10 participating teams, 35 players who featured in the 2022 Maurice Revello Tournament will take part in the competition.

It is the football event of this early 2023 in South America. The continent's ten teams will compete from 19 January to 12 February in the 30th edition of the Sudamericano U20, which is being held this year in Colombia after a four-year absence due to the pandemic. The four semi-finalists will qualify for the U20 World Cup in Indonesia in June.

Of the ten teams competing, three took part in the 2022 Maurice Revello Tournament in preparation for the continental tournament.

ARGENTINA

Argentina, who finished fifth in the last tournament, will have 13 players who were in France last June. Still led by Javier Mascherano, the Albiceleste will want to build on the world title won by the senior team in Qatar in December and return to a trophy they have not won since 2015. Particularly worth watching in this team is midfielder Facundo Buonanotte, fresh from his move to Brighton. In a very tough group with Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay and Peru, the task is going to be tough.

Hector Cardenas, who was already on the bench last summer, has called up 13 players for the Tournament, including the midfield pair Velez-Puerta, who performed very well on the Provence pitches in June. The Colombians will face a tough group at home against Argentina and Brazil. But if they are to win a competition that has eluded the national team since 2013, they will have to do so.

VENEZUELA

The surprise team of the 2022 Maurice Revello Tournament arrives as a real underdog. Venezuela, runner-up in the tournament last June, impressed with their team spirit and solidarity. It is no surprise, therefore, that nine players from the 2022 squad have been called up to play in the Sudamericano. Under the guidance of Fabricio Coloccini, assistant coach at the Tournament, the Vinotinto will have to overcome Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador and Uruguay in their group. But with Telasco Segovia, the Tournament's best player in 2022, their tall goalkeeper Samuel Rodriguez and the gifted Yerson Chacon, the Venezuelans will have something to play for.
