2022 FIFA World Cup - Round of 16 : how did the Tournament almunis perform ?

After each round, find the recap of what the players who have passed through the Maurice Revello Tournament and are competing in the World Cup did.

THEY SHINED

An exciting quarter-final. This is what awaits France and England this Saturday after both teams qualified. The French were the first to validate their ticket for the next round by beating Poland on Sunday (3-1). Didier Deschamps' men (1988 Tournament) first struggled in first half, but Hugo Lloris kept them afloat. The best goalkeeper of the Maurice Revello Tournament in 2006 and new co-recordman of the number of caps in the French team with Lilian Thuram (142) made a superb save on Piotr Zielinski while the score was still 0-0. With their captain and also an excellent Adrien Rabiot (2014 Tournament) in midfield, the Tricolores finally managed to open the score before the break before unleashing a second half.

It was on Sunday evening that they were joined by the English. Gareth Southgate's men (2014 and 2016 Tournaments) defeated Senegal in a near-perfect performance. The Three Lions were pushed around by a resilient Senegalese team, but they stayed at 0-0 thanks to their goalkeeper Jordan Pickford (2015 and 2016 Tournaments). They then gave their opponents no chance with a cool 3-0 victory. The clash between France and England on Saturday is promising and already historic: it will be the first face-off in the knockout phase between the two teams, Euro and World Cup combined.

A formality. Brazil gave South Korea no chance in their Round of 16 match (4-1). It only took 36 minutes for the Seleção to score their 4 goals and end the suspense. If the first half was one-sided, the second half was more balanced, with the South Koreans much more enterprising. Paulo Bento's men even forced Alisson Becker to make several saves. The 2013 Maurice Revello Tournament-winning goalkeeper made five saves, some of them quite spectacular. A slight slackening on the part of the Brazilians that they will have to try to avoid against Croatia in the quarter-finals.

Morocco in the history books. Against Spain, the Atlas Lions achieved a real feat by eliminating La Roja on penalties (0-0, 3-0 tab). After Cameroon (1990), Senegal (2002) and Ghana (2010), Morocco becomes the fourth African nation in history to reach the quarter-finals of a World Cup. A performance of which the goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was the great architect. Imperial for 120 minutes, the goalkeeper, who played in the Tournament in 2012, then saved two of the three Spanish shots. Heroic.

The Moroccans will face Portugal in the next round. Fernando Santos's men put in a very high level performance, beating Switzerland 6-1. To everyone's surprise, Cristiano Ronaldo (Tournament 2003) was a substitute at kick-off, replaced in attack by the young Gonçalo Ramos. The 21-year-old striker, who played in the 2019 Tournament, was celebrating his first start for the national team, and in what manner. The Benfica player scored a magnificent hat-trick and had a night to remember for the rest of his life.
