Jonathan David, Canada’s new lethal weapon

Few weeks after playing the Maurice Revello Tournament 2018 with Canada, the 18-year-old Jonathan David is making a name for himself thanks to his impressive performances with Gent as well as his national team.

The young Canadian forward is living the dream of each young footballer : enjoying a rise from an unknown teenager to a promising player in only few months.

Little throwback. While he was still playing in a non-professional league in Canada, the New York-born earned a trial with the Jupiler Pro League side Gent. Seduced by his displays, the Belgian club decided to sign him on January, few days after the youngster celebrated his 18th anniversary.

Few months later, David took part in the Maurice Revello Tournament 2018. The chance for him to catch the eye of the Canada senior national team head coach John Herdman. The best was yet to come for David.

After producing some interesting displays during the Maurice Revello Tornament 2018, David has enjoyed a dream start to the season with Gent. The 18-year-old forward has already scored six goals in as many games played. More impressive : he has found the net every 40 minutes with Les Buffalos so far !

His performances allowed him to earn his first Canada call-up. “I’m very happy that the coach and his staff saw my abilities and gave me a chance to represent my country.  People don’t know Canada very well and I want to do something special with this squad, take the country to a place where it hasn’t been for a while”. Translation : help Canada to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since…1986 !

Ambitious, David has quickly repaid the faith shown in him as he netted a brace for his debut against US Virgin Islands (8-0) in the CONCACAF Nations League qualifiers. He became the youngest Canadian player ever to score on his debut.

“If you told me last year that I’d be here currently, I wouldn’t believe you for sure ! This is incredible !”, he said few minutes after his baptism of fire at the international level.
