Toulon Tournament's 100 best players : (40-31)

More than 1700 international players took part in the Toulon Tournament founded in 1967 by Maurice Revello. Many of these players have enjoyed a successful career . Ahead of the 45th edition of the Toulon Tournament (29 May-10 June), we unveil you the best 100 players in the Toulon Tournament history. Today, we continue our countdown by looking at the players ranked 40-31.

40. WILLY SAGNOL


Born on 18th March 1977
Position : defender
Played the Toulon Tournament on : 1997
Clubs : AS Saint-Étienne (1995-1997), AS Monaco (1997-200), Bayern Munich (2000-2008)

On 1997, the French right-back won the Toulon Tournament with others big names as Thierry Henry or David Trezeguet. Just after that, he signed for AS Monaco and then Bayern Munich, when he won five Bundesliga and a Champions League.

39. LUIS FERNANDEZ

The Toulon Tournament 1982 was tough for France and Luis Fernandez, who couldn't do better than a 7th spot. Fortunately for the midfielder, he has done better during his career and won a Euro with France.

38. ROBERT PIRES

Robert Pires and the Toulon Tournament, such a special history ! For a simple reason : if the former Arsenal player took part to the year 1994, he was not supposed to play it again on 1995.
A misunderstanding between FC Metz, his club at the moment, and French federation ended in a funny situation. Robert Pires shown up at the meeting place, such a big surprise for the head coach Roger Lemerre. He explained to his player that he was not called for the competition. Nevertheless, after a few minutes talking, he decided to bring him with the team and France reached the final !

37. EMMANUEL PETIT

When he still was an AS Monaco player, Emmanuel Petit took part to the Toulon Tournament 1990 at only 19 years old. A few years later, he scored the third goal for France against Brazil in World Cup 1998 final (3-0).

36. ANDONI ZUBIZARRETA

The Toulon Tournament 1981 was tough for Andoni Zubizarreta and Spain, who sitted on the last spot of the competition. This situations contrasts with the successful carrer of the goalkeeper, who is the 4th player to have play the most with Spain. The current Sports director of Olympique de Marseille clinched a Champions League and the Liga six times.

35. CARLOS MOZER

On 1980, Brazil won the Toulon Tournament. Among this team, Carlos Mozer was one of the best players. After doing pretty well with Flamengo, he shined in Europe with Olympique de Marseille and Benfica.

34. CLAUDIO MARCHISIO

The emblematic Juventus player was making part of the Italian golden generation who won the Toulon Tournament on 2008. He notably scored a goal against Turkey during the group round (3-1).

33. RADAMEL FALCAO

If Colombia couldn't do better than a 6th spot during Toulon Tournament 2004, all the observers were impressed by a certain Radamel Falcao. a 18 years old striker. At the moment, he just made his debut with River Plate. Before to come in Europe and win two Europa Leagues.

32. GARY MEDEL

With Marcelo Bielsa as the head coach, Chile reached the final of Toulon Tournament 2008. This year was the chance to discover Gary Medel, who was playing at Universidad Catolica at the moment. A few years later, he won two Copa America in a row.

Player with superb skills, James Rodriguez helped Colombia to clinch the Toulon Tournament 2011. The current Real Madrid player was named as the best player of the competition. After that, he won several titles with Porto FC and Real Madrid.
