Few weeks ago, England U20 head coach Paul Simpson travelled to the south of France to visit notably Aubagne, one of the host cities of the Maurice Revello Tournament 2019, held from 1st to 15th June. The opportunity for the Young Lions coach to give his thoughts ahead of the start of the 47th edition of the Maurice Revello Tournament.
« It didn’t surprise me. I was expecting whoever we were drawn against, It will be tough. It’s a really tough draw, I think playing against Chile, a South American team, is always a real challenge. They’re very technical and very aggressive in the way they play. The Japanese boast fantastic technical footballers, very lively and Portugal, they are just Portugal. They’re very very good, very strong in all age groups. It’s a great test for us. It’s a tournament that I’m really looking forward to come and being involved in. Hopefully we can continue the good work made over the last years.”

“There is some pressure because we want to continue the good work and there is some excitement because it’s a real big challenge for us. We used it as an experience for the players to come and be part of a tournament football. Hopefully, in years to come, when they gonna be involved in the senior team, they’ll used to be away from home for a long period of time, they’ll be used to play games in quick succession. They’ve got to play, recover and go again. There is a lot of things I’m really looking forward to. Hopefully, we will be able to come here and show to the French people, show the Chileans, show the Japanese, the Portuguese, that we’ve got some good footballers in our country.”
“I’m really excited, I’ve had a fantastic time here in 1987, I scored in the first game against Morocco, my only ever goal for England ! So that was fantastic. We didn’t win on that occasion but I hope as a head coach, I will be able to win the winning medal”
