5 February 2017
How times flies and some absences leave an emptiness that is hard to fill. Today, February 5th, it’s been a year since Maurice Revello, the Toulon Tournament founder, left us...
During these twelve months, the football planet didn’t stop turning. Without doubt, Maurice and his friends Rethacker, Velikovic, Sinet, Sequerra & co took a closer look at the last events.
The new Ballon d’Or won by Cristiano Ronaldo (winner of the Toulon Tournament 2013) and the European title clinched by Portugal during the last summer have certainly caused much debate beyond the clouds.
In his lifetime, Maurice has attached importance to youth football and we guess he was delighted with the trophies won by both France men’s and women’s U19 squads. Also, he is probably excited to see the next French generation in the upcoming 45th Festival (29 May-10 June). And what about the U20 Asian Championship title won by Japan ? A nation made for football according to Maurice in his lifetime
True lover of offensive football, Maurice Revello should appreciate the quality of the AS Monaco strike duo Falcao-Germain. The Colombian striker and the Frenchman have both impressed the Toulon Tournament founder in 2004 and 2012 respectively. As well as Thomas Lemar, winner of the Festival in 2015. Maurice would not be surprised by the successful season produced by the Monaco. He would not be surprised too by the Gareth Southgate’s astonishing rise who became the English senior squad head coach after winning the Festival in 2016.
Here, Maurice is still present and his successors are always asking him about the attitude to adopt, the right decision to take. The “Legend” label given by Marseille European Capital of Sport to our competition should please him and reassure him about one thing : football can’t exist without hopes…
The TV ratings of the 2016 Festival final between England and France have proven that the viewers love the beautiful football. The football played with no ulterior motive, the game played with the idea to score one more goal than the opponent.
So, that’s logical to change the name of our competition from Festival International Espoirs to Maurice Revello Tournament. Because, without Maurice, it would be difficult to live every spring, the scenes of jubilation triggered by our competition.
