The Mediterranean Team beat Qatar 1-0 on matchday 3 of Group B. Here are the post-game reactions from the coaches and players of both teams.
Nordine Assami (Mediterranean Team coach) :
"It's a symbolic win for us. We wanted to show that we weren't too far off international level.
In the first two games, we lost out on a few details, notably physical fitness and the intensity of top-level football.
Our message was to never give up and with a lot of hard work we managed to pick up our first win of the tournament."
Ugo Bertelli (Mediterranean team player) :
"We have a very proud feeling tonight for our team's first win, which was created in 48 hours. We had a few training sessions to get to know each other. The victory and the fact that we finished 3rd in the group is the culmination of all our hard work over the week.
We played two good games overall, but unfortunately we conceded two goals at the end of both games.
We can only learn from our mistakes, they can only make us grow."
Bruno Pinheiro (Qatar coach) :
"It was very tough, but it was a good game to learn how to play. Our opponents scored man-to-man all over the pitch. I think they made the right choice because they were much stronger physically. We had problems in the first half and then, in the second half, we managed to create more space and time to play and we started to cause the Mediterranean side problems.
That's the way football is. I think the best team in the group is Australia. It was our worst game against them and that's the one we won on penalties. Then we played a great game against Mexico for an hour, and I think we were the best team on the pitch up until 1-0. We took three goals in six minutes from corners and we ruined everything. Today, we missed the penalty that would have given us the lead."
Lotfi Madjer (Qatar player) :
"I think we played pretty well. Unfortunately, we missed a penalty. That was a blow to our confidence. The Mediterranean team also had a penalty and they scored it. They were more decisive than us and it came down to detail today.
Our objective is still the same: to win and represent Qatar properly. Even if we don't qualify for the next round, we still want to go out with a good reputation."
